Yahh! The title is tricky! Yup, it is! Because actually, NEF files is not supported in Photoshop CS2. I had the first hand experience. Because I am a newbie using Photoshop (thanks to my brother), I spent my time researching how to open a NEF file on CS2. It was quite a long day for me but out of the many articles that I have reaad, there were quite a few that mentioned steps on how to open: it could either be by installing a plug-in or it could be changing some of the files of the format in the installed program. What the heck? I just mentioned I am a newbie and all I want to do for now is to just get the hang of using CS2.
Moving forward, as you may know, it's been quite a few months already that I have been shooting with RAW. How do I open my RAW file? Well, I went for the freeware! UFRAW to be exact! Since I have been using .GIMP, it was so timely because UFRAW allows you to open your NEF (which is Nikon's file format for RAW and it stands as Nikon Electronic Format)file with GIMP. It was so much easy.
As I transitioned from GIMP to Photshop, I have in my mind not to delete my GIMP because whatever it may be, GIMP will always have a dear place in heart. Yes, it because GIMP teaches me how to enhance my photos. Going back, so since I was in desperation mode and tired of browsing the net, there was really no way for me to do what I am supposed to do.
After a few minute break, then I decided that I will still continue to shoot in RAW. And I did! I opened my Raw file with UFRAW, opened it through GIMP to do some little tweaking and post processing. After doing so, I saved my file in JPEG then later opened it in Photoshop to enhance the post processing.
Well, that's the story for now. Whoever happens to stumble on this post, if you have any idea how to open NEF files on photoshop, your knowledge is more than welcome! I know one way though and that is through Lightroom, but for now, I don't have it.
